Wi? or 4G?
The basic iPad gets on the internet via wi?. The 4G can also take a mobile phone SIM. It’s £100 extra, so think about how often you’ll need it especially if you have an iPhone contract that allows Personal Hotspot (‘tethering’), which can connect the iPad (the 4G iPad can also do this for other devices). LTE, the ultra-fast mobile network that the 4G model supports, isn’t available in the UK yet
Calls and messaging
You can make Face-Time calls video or just audio to other iOS and Mac users (via wi?), and contact them using Apple’s iMessage, which works like texting but only between Apple devices. The 4G iPad isn’t a mobile phone you can’t make voice calls over the cell network, or get texts (SMS).
Cameras
The new iPad’s iSight camera, the one you actually take pictures with, is very good, even if its five megapixels don’t quite match up to the iPhone 4S. You may think a tablet is an unwieldy camera, but shooting stills or 1080p video clips and then editing them on a high-res screen on the same device is irresistible
Connectivity
The iPad has no USB or memory card slot, so it can be tricky getting photos and other data on and of although iCloud helps. The camera connection Kit (£25 from the Apple Store) provides a USB port and an SD card reader
Batery life
Giving about ten hours of continuous use, the iPad easily lasts a full day
Smart Cover
Apple’s fold-up stand/cosy is clever, but there are more practical alternatives
